College of Public Health and Management of Chongqing Medical University is located at Chongqing Municipality which is the youngest municipality of China. Economically, Chongqing is the center of the cities at the upper Yangtze River. Historically, Chongqing has a long history of over 3000 years. The 34,200,000 population at the land of 82,400 square kilometers welcome you with its quickly developing economy and a wonderful treasure of history.
In 1956, one half of the teachers of the First Shanghai Medical College (the Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University) came to Chongqing to support the set up of Chongqing Medical University (CQMU). That year, the CQMU was established. CQMU is composed of two campus, Yuzhong Campus and Jinyun Campus. And the four affiliated hospitals directly under its administration have a good reputation all over China.
With a great development, now CQMU has 5,228 personnel, of which over 300 are professors and over 800 are associate professors. Many of them enjoy the special government allowances or have been selected into the national programs of 'Project for Millions of Talented People', and 'Project for Millions of Talented People of New Century’.
The School of Public Health and Management of CQMU takes great responsibility for the public health of Chongqing people. It not only cultivates talents majoring in preventive medicine and health management, but also provides services for the health policy-makers in the area of Chongqing Municipality and national government with the purpose of improving the health level of population and strengthening the local health system.
Our School has 102 teachers and administrative clerks with more than 4,000 undergraduate students and 243 master degree candidates. Most of our undergraduate students are on the new campus (Jinyun campus) while our master degree candidates and teachers spend most of their research time on the Yuanjiagang campus.
Our School has a long history. It develops from the Public Heath Teaching section set up in 1956. It is characterized by its cross-discipline between public health and management. With wonderful development since then, it has achieved great progress on education, research, capacity building and cooperation, which provides great opportunity for our students to learn more about public health locally, and also provides them with lots of opportunities to access to national and international public health. The following are detailed introduction to our wonderful School.
Education
There are three types of programs. Under the program of medicine, it is mainly about public health and preventive medicine, such as majors of Preventive Medicine, Nutrition and Sanitary Inspection. Under the program of management, it is mainly about health management, such as majors of Health Management, Health Economy and Health Law. And the third type of program includes majors such as Applied Psychology and Statistics.
We have developed 164 different courses. We enrolls an average of 500 new students every year. What’s more, we breake the boundaries of the courses and set up the practice bases for our undergraduate students, which aims to cultivate the innovation and research ability of students. We have established 11 social practice teams under the guidance of professors and other experiences teachers in our School. The enrolled students will go to rural area and communities to make field study on a specific topic and write the report to the school. If the report is well, the team will be recommended to participate the innovation contest of the Chongqing City.
Research
Our School pays much attention to its research development. We have construct three scientific institutions: Reproductive Biology Research Center, Medicine and Social Development Center, and Food Safety Check Technology Center.
The Reproductive Center has got six projects of National Natural Science Foundation of China. And eight SCI articles were published and the total IF is 24.34.
The Medicine and Social Development Center has got seven research projects from DFID. National medical science special fund of China, Chinese society of nutrition and CQ education bureau. And the health policy team of the Center has got two special health policy projects from the World Bank. There are14 SCI articles published with a total IF of 43,among which the highest IF is 6. What’s important that many results of our projects have been adopted by the government both provincial level but national level.
The Food Safety Center is the youngest among the three centers. But under the social context with a great need on food safety, it has developed quickly and has a bright future.
In total, the three centers has got 68 research projects, among which 43 are funded by the government and 25 are funded by the organizations, such as WHO, World Bank, EU and so on. The five National Natural Science Foundation of China, which is the best achievement since our school was established, has promoted the development of our School greatly. And a total of 169 articles have been published, among of which 21 articles are SCI (IF=55.98), one is EI and one is CSSCI. And we also got the first prize of CQ Technology Development with the complete of the research on the Popularization and Demonstration Model of Medical Appropriate Technology in China.
On research, we do not only make effort by ourselves, but also promote the research exchange with the outside world. Up until now, there are 64 members participate the academic conference at home or abroad, which strengthens the influence of our school. In order to make good use of our research results, we also come out to the community to do some training, such as the health education training at community, school and so on.
Capacity building
Our School has done a lot to promote its capacity building. In order to cultivate young researchers, 15 young researchers and research team key members have been to Sweden, USA, UK and Australia for exchange with a foundation by the international organization, Chinese government , CQMU and our School, which broaden the teachers’ outlook. And in order to elevate the research ability of the whole school, we have appointed Professor Shenglan Tang and Xu Ling to be our part-time professors.
Cooperation
We have make our efforts to cooperate with domestic and international professional institutions and experts. Such as we have been to the Shandong University and Fujian University to exchange the experience in teaching and research. Internationally, we have done a lot on academic exchange, such as accepting exchange students with Malardalen University (2 undergraduates and 2 master students), and Swansea University (1 undergraduate 3+1+1, 2 master students 1 year).
