Recently, the maternal-fetal medicine team led by Professor QI Hongbo at First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University published an article titled "The Placenta Regulates Intrauterine Fetal Growth via Exosomal PPARγ" in the internationally authoritative academic journal Advanced Science. The latest research findings provide a new approach for the intrauterine treatment of growth-restricted fetuses during pregnancy.

This latest research comprehensively investigates the regulation of fetal adipogenesis and growth by placental PPARγ through exosomal transport at multiple levels. It innovatively applies placenta-specific nanodelivery particles to deliver the PPARγ agonist rosiglitazone for the intrauterine treatment of fetal growth restriction (FGR).

The research findings are of great significance—they open up a highly promising new avenue for the clinical treatment of FGR, potentially shifting FGR treatment from traditional passive interventions to precise targeted therapies, providing a new pathway for intrauterine treatment of growth-restricted fetuses during pregnancy.

Prof. Qi explained that FGR fetuses exhibit poor adipogenesis, and their catch-up growth after birth often leads to adipose tissue dysfunction, significantly increasing the risk of type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome in adulthood, with profound long-term health impacts on offspring.

Currently, treatment options for FGR are limited, and the effectiveness of drug interventions is insufficient. Therefore, in-depth exploration of its pathogenesis and innovative treatment strategies have become critical issues to be addressed in the field of perinatal medicine.
